Whitney Elizabeth Houston was the youngest child of singer Dionne Warswick and gospel music legend Cissy Houston. Whitney Elizabeth Houston grew up in a family that was musical. She began singing in the choir at the church she attended The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark as a young child at the age of fifteen, she was singing back vocals professionally along with their mother in Chaka Khans 1978 hit Im Every Woman. In the year 1981, she was a model and appeared on the Seventeen cover. She also provided backing vocals to Jermaine and Lou Rawls. Her first gig was as a lead performer for the New York-based New York Funk band Material. Her quality of vocal performance attracted the attention of the major label Arista where she signed up in 1983. In 1985, Whitney Houston's debut album turned out to be the best-selling debut album ever. It featured a number of hits like How Will I Know You're Good to Me, Saving All My Love For you and The greatest Love of All. It allowed her to achieve seven US chart-topping singles consecutively, a feat that surpasses the Beatles. The album was sold out of 3 million copies in its initial year in the US and went on to sell 25 million worldwide winning it the very first one of six Grammys. The Whitney 1987 record, with the songs Where Do Broken Hearts and I Wanna Dance With Somebody as hits, helped build upon the successes she'd had. However, the 1992 movie The Bodyguard sealed her spot as one of the most successful musicians of all-time. Although the film was not highly appreciated and neither did her performance, the soundtrack to her Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You hit the top of both singles and albums charts across the US for a period of time. The album sold over 44 million copies. In the same year, she got married to Bobby Brown who was a previous New Edition singer. She had their sole daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown together on March 23, 1993. Her daily drug usage was well documented.
