Her father Michel Horowitz, and mother Cynthia Palmer are authors and editors. Ryder is a Jew. Ryder believes that her father had a Jewish family. The actress has also a half-sister named Sunyata Jubal. Her younger sibling is Uria. Ryder's parents moved her and her siblings to Mendocino County California when Ryder was seven years old. The family resided in an area without electricity. Ryder was a prolific reader because of the lack of television. Ryder took acting classes when Ryder was twelve years old, at the American Conservatory Theatre. Lucas was let go in 1986 and Ryder, then only 15, landed a role as a leading actor. Ryder faced bullying during her high school years. Her performing career, she thought, would help her. However, that didn't happen. The actress continued to chase her dreams. It was 1988 the year that Tim Burton released Beetlejuice that she got her big break. Ryder kept playing successful roles in several movies. In 1993, she received an Oscar Award in the film The Age of Innocence.
